SA Fashion Week 2011
This year’s South African fashion week kicked off on 22nd September with a splendid vibe. Hosted at the Crowne Plaza Johannesburg in Rosebank, this classy and must see show was very well attended with the who’s who of the fashion industry and a great line up of local talent.
Elle New Talent
The opening show was The Elle New Talent Design Search in Association with Mr Price and featured designers like Anneke Koster, Charl Janse Van Rensburg, Samantha Constable, Danielle Hartman, Khumo Manota, Lameez Claasen, Kutloano Molokomme and the 2010 winner Cleo Droomer. This year’s winner Kelly Esterhuynes graced the cat walk with her mohair collection which she hand knitted herself in just three months. That was indeed a memorable show at this year’s SAFW.
Gert-Johan Coetzee
The Gert-Johan Coetzee collection which was inspired by the lifestyle of the rich and famous, featured lots of bold colours, feathery, satin silks and mismatched pieces and only Gert could pull off something like that. The collection really connected with most of the people in the room and the highlight was when sexy Bonang Matheba who is the face of the label Gert-Johan Coetzee, walked down in a black and white princess dress. This was admittedly a great collection.
46664
The 46664 collection was a surprise for most of the guests at the show. The collection was screaming proudly South African with detail from traditional African printed fabrics with pill-box hats, belted pieces and a lot of modern prints. It was colour blocking at its best, it featured both menswear and ladies wear. The ladies had on fun, flirty and powerful pieces with bold bright suits with different belt colors and the men had coloured trench coats with bright colour pants folded and colourful cardigans. The aim of the collection was to connect to the legacy of the country’s greatest leader and it was inspired by how Nelson Mandela dressed during the apartheid era, and this I must say was mind blowing.
